Ric Bucher on why the Celtics didn't make a move at the trade deadline: "Danny (Ainge) said that he didn’t want to be Red Auerbach, that he didn’t want to be a guy who died on the vine with his superstars the way Auerbach did with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish. And yet, all of a sudden, that’s exactly what Ainge is becoming. In fact, a GM said to me, ‘He may regret those words because right now that’s what Danny is looking down the barrel of’. I do believe that (Ainge) looked around and was trying to make something happen but the reality is that for him to do something he was going to have to take several steps backwards with this team and he just couldn’t get anything near equal in value. People know the age of these guys, they know what they’re capable of at this point, and they know that they still have multiple years left on their contracts. So you add all that together, and Danny didn’t really have the wherewithal to make a deal that wouldn’t look like ‘You know what? You should’ve made a deal a year or two earlier’."
