GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Zack Greinke was scratched from Monday's scheduled start and will fly to Los Angeles to have his right elbow examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Greinke missed a bullpen session 10 days ago because of discomfort in the back of the elbow, missed a start five days ago because of the flu, then threw an impressive bullpen session on Friday without issue.

But the discomfort returned when he played catch on Sunday. The club said that the decision to send Greinke for an exam was made "out of an abundance of caution." He is expected to return later in the day.

Greinke told the club that he dealt with similar elbow issues in the past but that they never kept him from missing a start.

Greinke had an MRI last week that ruled out ligament damage, manager Don Mattingly said.

"The fact that he's not here is a little bit of a concern," Mattingly said. "Listening to Zack, he can pitch with this. I know we're being really cautious.
