What would you do if you didn’t like your future brother in law and he also wanted to get into the same line of work you did? Well that’s the premise of the new Universal movie “Ride Along”(PG-13) starring Ice Cube and comedian Kevin Hart.
Ben(Kevin Hart) wants to become an Atlanta PD but has something standing in his way, that’s James(Ice Cube) who just happens to be a cop oh and the brother of Ben’s fiancé Angela(Tika Sumpter). Even though Ben gets accepted to the Police Academy, James still wants to show Ben that he’s just not cut out for that line of work by taking him on a ride along. By the way, James is also trying to find this elusive guy named Omar who is doing some bad stuff in the area, but of course Ben is going to get involved whether he wants to or not.
The following scenario leads us to familiar cop buddy picture story with mistakes here and there by Ben to show us maybe he’s not ready for this line of work as well as explosions, car chases and more. Even though Ride Along does follow the formula per se I think that Cube and Hart make for a formidable pairing. Again, I never walked into this movie expecting more than I received, a nice safe movie with laughs and fun for a little more than an hour and a half. Ice Cube does a great job as the angry brother who really is just looking out for his baby sister Angela while Kevin Hart does his best job for comic relief with surprising consistency for I think is one of his first mainstream movies. Laurence Fishburne(The Matrix) lends some gravitas later in the movie and there are some twists and turns but nothing you can’t figure out.
I enjoyed Ride Along for what it is, and that’s a fun, comedic venture with a couple of life lessons thrown in too. Look, there are no academy award nominations coming from this romp but laughs will and that’s good enough for me.
